This permit grants you access for parking and hiking the Kuaokala Trail or for navigating forest reserve roads via the Air Force Ka'ena Point Tracking Station.

Day Use Only: This permit is valid for hiking, biking, and four-wheeling. It is not a camping permit.
Access Hours: 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Vehicle Limit: One permit per vehicle
Number of People: Seven (7) people are allowed under one permit.
No Overnight Parking:
Overnight parking requires a camping permit.
Vehicle Requirements:
Four-wheel drive vehicles are required on these roads, which connect the Waianae Mountains' west (Waianae) side with the north (Mokuleia) side. These routes provide access to Peacock Flats campgrounds, hunting areas, the Kealia access road, and the Kuaokala Trail.
Safety Reminder: Exercise caution while driving, and be considerate of other users. High-speed or reckless driving is prohibited and may lead to road closures. If conditions become challenging, it’s best to turn around rather than risk getting stuck or damaging the road.
Stay Informed:
Be aware that road and campground closures can occur. For the latest updates, visit the Na Ala Hele website at hawaiitrail.ehawaii.gov or call the KPSTS landline at (808) 697-4311. All Forest Reserves will close during tropical storm and hurricane warnings, so stay updated on weather conditions via the National Weather Service website.
Drive towards Ka‘ena Point on Farrington Highway until you reach The Kaena State Park section of the Mauka Kaena State Park or Keawaula. Turn right and check in with your permit at the security guard station for the Ka‘ena Point Tracking Station. Continue up the road until you get to the intersection with the second guard shack on the left. Turn right at the stop sign and proceed past the Tracking Station. Once past the station, the road curves to the left and you will pass another intersection on the right. Adjacent to the next intersection is a large dirt parking area. (This is where you can park to go on the Kuaokala Trail.)

Historically the Air Force has closed public access during RIMPAC in the month of July and on the anniversary of September 11. It is recommended that you call to check on the status of access in the event that the Air Force closes public access for security reasons. During these closures, you will not be able drive up the road through the Kaena Point Satellite Tracking Station at The Kaena State Park section of the Mauka Kaena State Park or Keawaula. The permittee waives any and all claims against the State of Hawaii, U. S. Air Force, and its respective officers, agents, and employees and agrees to hold harmless and indemnify the State of Hawaii, U. S. Air Force and its respective officers, agents and employees from any suits, actions and claims arising out of or in any way connected with the activities allowed under this permit.
