Day Use Permit to access Kuaokala and Mokuleia Forest Reserve via Kaena Point Tracking Station Division of Forestry and Wildlife - Hawaii Trails Day Use Permits



Description

Permit is for parking and hiking the Kuaokala Trail or for accessing forest reserve roads via the Air Force Ka'ena Point Tracking Station. 

  • Permit is for day use only for Hiking, Biking and Four-Wheeling - This is not a camping permit
  • Access is only from sunup to sundown - To be safe: 7:15am to 5:45pm
  • One permit per vehicle. 
  • In Response to COVID-19, the Division of Forestry and Wildlife is promoting the concept of responsible recreation Please be responsible when engaging in outdoor activities by following CDC guidelines and maintaining social distance at all times. Please exercise good judgment, be safe and respect trail head neighborhoods and communities. 
  • Current guest limit is no more than four (4) people based on the current order guidlines
  • Camping permits are required for overnight parking. There is no overnight parking allowed at or around the Air Force Facility.     

Four-wheel drive vehicles are required on these roads. These roads basically connect the west or "Waianae" side of the Waianae mountains with the north or "Mokuleia" side of the Waianae mountains. Both roads allow four-wheel or bicycle access to Peacock Flats campgrounds, hunting areas, Kealia access road and trail, as well as the Kuaokala trail. Caution is advised while driving on these roads. Please be courteous of other users in the area. Extream or highspeed driving is not allowed and may lead to road closure. Rather than getting stuck or damaging the road, it may be better to turn around and try another day.  

 

Know before you go! Road or campground closures can happen. Location

Drive towards Ka‘ena Point on Farrington Highway until you reach The Kaena State Park section of the Mauka Kaena State Park or Keawaula. Turn right and check in with your permit at the security guard station for the Ka‘ena Point Tracking Station. Continue up the road until you get to the intersection with the second guard shack on the left. Turn right at the stop sign and proceed past the Tracking Station. Once past the station, the road curves to the left and you will pass another intersection on the right. Adjacent to the next intersection is a large dirt parking area. (This is where you can park to go on the Kuaokala Trail.)

  • One permit per vehicle
  • Must have four-wheel drive to access forest roads
  • Historically the Air Force has closed public access during RIMPAC in the month of July and on the anniversary of September 11. It is recommended that you call to check on the status of access in the event that the Air Force closes public access for security reasons. During these closures, you will not be able drive up the road through the Kaena Point Satellite Tracking Station at The Kaena State Park section of the Mauka Kaena State Park or Keawaula.   • The permittee waives any and all claims against the State of Hawaii, U. S. Air Force, and its respective officers, agents, and employees and agrees to hold harmless and indemnify the State of Hawaii, U. S. Air Force and its respective officers, agents and employees from any suits, actions and claims arising out of or in any way connected with the activities allowed under this permit.
